What is The Photographer's Ephemeris?

The Photographer's Ephemeris is a powerful planning application for photographers that bridges the gap between celestial mechanics and artistic vision. It solves the core challenge of outdoor photography: predicting where and when the sun or moon will be. By plotting these celestial bodies on detailed maps (including topographic and satellite views), TPE shows you the exact angle of sunrise, sunset, moonrise, and moonset for any date and location. This allows photographers to pre-visualize scenes, scout locations remotely, and plan shoots with confidence, ensuring they capture the landscape under optimal lighting conditions.

Key Features of The Photographer's Ephemeris

Sun and Moon Visualization on Maps

The core feature overlays dynamic, color-coded lines showing the sun and moon's azimuth (direction) and altitude paths onto interactive maps. You can pinch and zoom on any location worldwide to see exactly where the light will fall across mountains, valleys, or cityscapes.

Golden Hour & Blue Hour Calculator

TPE doesn't just show sunrise and sunset; it calculates the precise timings for golden hour (civil twilight) and blue hour (nautical twilight). This is critical for planning shoots that require the soft, directional light of dawn or the deep blue tones after sunset.

Augmented Reality (AR) View

Use your mobile device's camera for on-location scouting. The AR view superimposes the future path of the sun or moon onto your live camera feed, allowing you to frame your shot in real-time based on where the light will be later in the day.

Topographic & 3D Terrain Profiles

For landscape photographers, understanding how terrain blocks light is vital. TPE integrates topographic data to show elevation profiles, revealing when a mountain ridge will cast a shadow or when the sun will crest a peak.

Save and Share Locations

Save your meticulously planned shoot locations with custom notes. Share these plans with clients, models, or assistant photographers, ensuring everyone is synchronized for the critical shooting window.

Who Should Use The Photographer's Ephemeris?

TPE is indispensable for any photographer whose work depends on natural light. It is a must-have for landscape and nature photographers planning shots of specific landmarks under sunrise or sunset light. Travel photographers use it to maximize limited time in a new location. Real estate and architectural photographers utilize it to schedule shoots when building facades are perfectly lit. Adventure and elopement photographers rely on it to guarantee magical lighting for their clients. Even nightscape and astrophotographers use its moon phase and position data to plan for Milky Way shots during moonless nights or illuminate foregrounds with moonlight.

The Photographer's Ephemeris Pricing and Free Tier

The Photographer's Ephemeris operates on a paid license model for its robust desktop application (available for macOS and Windows), which offers the most powerful set of planning features. A feature-rich mobile app is also available for iOS and Android as a one-time purchase. While there is no traditional 'free tier,' the official website offers a fully functional web app version that provides core sun and moon visualization capabilities for free, allowing you to test its fundamental value before committing to a license. This model ensures ongoing development and support for a professional-grade tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is The Photographer's Ephemeris free to use?

A powerful web-based version with core features is available for free at photoephemeris.com. For the full feature set, including advanced topographic analysis, AR view, and offline use, a paid license is required for the desktop application, and the mobile apps are a one-time purchase.

Is The Photographer's Ephemeris good for landscape photographers?

Absolutely. It is considered an essential tool for professional landscape photographers. The ability to visualize sun and moon paths over specific terrain, calculate golden hour, and plan shots months in advance is invaluable for capturing iconic locations in their best light.

Can I use TPE for night photography or Milky Way planning?

Yes. While its strength is in sun and moon planning, this is directly applicable to night photography. By knowing when and where the moon will rise and set, and its phase, you can plan for a dark, moonless sky ideal for Milky Way photography or use moonlight to illuminate your foreground.

How accurate is The Photographer's Ephemeris?

Extremely accurate. TPE uses professional-grade astronomical algorithms (VSOP87) to calculate positions. Its predictions for sun and moon events are precise to within minutes, accounting for atmospheric refraction, which is the standard required by professional photographers and filmmakers.

Conclusion

For photographers who treat light as their primary subject, The Photographer's Ephemeris is more than an app—it's a fundamental part of the creative workflow. It replaces uncertainty with knowledge and luck with intention. While the investment is for serious photographers, the return—in the form of breathtaking, perfectly-timed images—is immeasurable. If your photography depends on the sun, the moon, and the landscape, mastering TPE is a non-negotiable step towards achieving consistent, professional results.
